In the novel Diary of a Young Girl, it is about 13 year old girl name Anne Frank writing about her experiences of going into hiding during the Holocaust. The novel opens up on her thirteenth birthday as she discusses daily experiences and opinions that she does not express with anyone else. Later on, she discusses about her family hiding in what she calls the Secret Annex. Throughout all of this, readers can see that although she is faced through these circumstances, she continues to exemplify characteristics of a typical thitteen year old adolescent. This is demonstrated by her sarcasm, the feeling of loneliness, and naivete attitude. These characteristics exemplify a typical, thirteen- year-old girl because similar to thirteen year olds, they have yet to grow up.

In these entries readers see that Anne is very sarcastic. However, they note that she is not sarcastic through out a lot of the text, but rather on the issues that are important to her. For example, in the first couple of her entries, she notes how a teacher complains about how she talks too much. Due to this, she was forced to write a series of essays that align to her talking too much and not paying attention in class. One particular, titled " A Chatter box", is intended to discuss how " talking is a female trait" and argues that because it is a female trait " there's not much you can do about inherited traits" ( Frank 12). This is significant because it shows demonstrates that Anne, similar to typical thirteen year olds, will do anything they like doing and will not let anything get in the way of it. Anne, like any typical thirteen year adolescent, surrounds herself with the people that know her really well, and is well liked.

However, this is not the same in Anne's perspective because she feels a sense of loneliness. For example, in one entry she writes about how she may have people who care about her, thus being the reason why she "confides everything to [the journal" (Frank 1). THis is significant because as much as she writes about her adventures with her friends and having people that like her, she still feels that she doesn't have someone to relate to her on a personal level. As she is a young adolescent, having someone that she can relate to other than what happens on daily events, is something she still has yet to grow into. As a young adolescent, the things that matter to them the most is their personal life is having friends and boyfriends, which is similarly presented in the Diary of A Young Girl However due to this attitude toward the situations she faces, it shows that she has the characteristic of naivete. In the beginning of this diary, she rarely discusses world events, but when she does it shows that she does not really know how bad they seem.

She writes how Jews were "severely restricted by a series of anti-Jewish decrees", but later explains that " life went on" as if this does not have an impact on her life (Frank 9). This is significant because typical thirteen adolescent girls find that their own problems such as gossip, boyfriends, crushes, and their parents a lot bigger than world events, which is in this case in is the Holocaust. However, with growth and maturity, she will learn that her daily experiences are a lot smaller compared the world's complications. With all of this, the reader can see that regardless of her very troubling circumstances she still expresses herself as a sarcastic, naive, and lonely typical adolescent.
