This week’s reading of the textbook,” Practicing College Learning Strategies” by Carolyn H. Hopper was chapter ten titled “Managing Stress” and it discusses how to recognize possible signs of stress and additionally, useful coping strategies. Personally, I enjoyed the variety of coping strategies and used a couple throughout the week. As I mentioned above, the text included some possible signs of stress, which included irritability, sleeping badly, loss of appetite, overeating, acne, lack of energy, and making poor decisions, and I could relate to a couple. This self-assessment portion of the chapter allowed me to realize that I was feeling stress, also it opened my eyes to what I could do to cope with it. In order to do this, I first had to determine what the stressor was.

Once I found the cause, I then followed the steps mentioned on pages 241-242 which explained how to solve a problem which was to gather information after determining the problem, and lastly, determine my options. What I learned- Chapter ten was full of information that I honestly never knew. As a result of reading this section of the book, I learned what stress is, what stressors are, symptoms of stress, and eight coping strategies. Although I found all the material very supportive, I believe that the eight different coping strategies really stood out. They stood out because they were all so different and exciting.

They weren't boring due to the diversity, at least that was what I thought, and were very easy to complete. My personal favorite was the musical background strategy because music tends to soothe and relax me. Personal Experience - The information I grasped this occasion, made me think of a couple of things that tend to stress me such as school work, not having the time to do the activities I want, and other pressures. The biggest stressor in my life would be my homework well actually more specifically, it would be math.Currently, I am working on Algebra 2 and although I know how to do complete most it, sometimes I get stuck on certain problems and as a result, get frustrated. While studying the chapter, I realized how truly practical the information is and how it could be applied to what I was feeling, so I used a couple of the coping strategies.

As I mentioned above under the heading, ”What I learned”, the musical background method was my favorite and it helped me a lot.Another strategy that I used when I felt stressed while doing math was journaling which was not mentioned in the book, but it helped me equally as the other strategy. Thanks to these methods of coping, I felt more calm, and peaceful at the end of the week. How it is beneficial- Week eight of this course will include devising a personal strategy of success due to the fact that,hopefully, we will feel better prepared to succeed in our life and education.I believe that chapter ten of the textbook set a strong foundation of support so that in our path to success, we will be emotionally prepared.

As the book mentioned,” Stress is completely normal and is our response to our changing environments”, so we should not fear it. Not all stress is bad, and we should keep that clearly in our minds. This week’s information has taught and prepared me how to solve problems which will and can help me in this eight-week course, and additionally, later in life.
