The company was founded by Milton Hershey in 1894. Located in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, he called his new enterprise the Hershey Chocolate Company. In 1900, the company began producing milk chocolate in bars, wafers and other shapes. Hershey’s chocolate factory uses a manufacturing process not the assembly process. In an assembly process different parts of the product are pieced together by different individuals.

At the Hershey’s factory all the ingredients are treated or refined to the absolute perfect state that is required to make the final product, all the processes are carried out by different machines which are interconnected, as one phase of manufacturing ends, the ingredient is passed on to the next phase to be treated further or mixed with other ingredients for example at the central blending operation the chocolate liquor is combined with the milk and sugar.

The manufacturing process at Hershey’s is a continuous process and not an intermittent one, even though the main ingredient which is the cocoa bean have to be removed from the pods and left in piles and heaps for the fermentation process which lasts for about a week, but the actual production process does not begin after the fermentation after which the chocolate is converted into liquid form which is combined with a coarse chocolate form after which the final product is made.

The location for the Hershey chocolate Factory has been chosen on the basis of the availability of the necessary ingredients required for the production of the item for consumption. The two most necessary ingredients are milk and cocoa bean. Pennsylvania is surrounded by acres of dairy farms which makes milk easily available in large quantities required by the Hershey’s chocolate factory.

Cocoa beans, the other necessary ingredient is imported, which arrives at the ports of New York and Philadelphia which makes it easier for the Hershey’s Chocolate factory to have large amount of cocoa beans delivered directly to the manufacturing site.
