Cheating and plagiarism are violations of academic integrity. They truly should not be done because why waste time copying when you can learn and understand the knowledge so it sticks with one forever. There is no sense wasting money on a college education if you make grades cheating without understanding. Knowledge is like Jenga, it builds off the previous levels, and if you pull the wrong brick and make the wrong choices, the tower will fall.
As I grow order and mature throughout school I have begun to realize just how important academic integrity really is in today’ academic world. I myself have had trouble in the past with this so very serious issue. My friend Nick and I completed plagiarism a very serious offense. However, at the time we did not see this as plagiarism.
Now after several discussions with our professor and others, like my parents, I realize that we were definitely in the wrong. I regret this awful decision each and every day; however, I can only learn from these past mistakes. This offense has really been on my mind a lot since it happened. I have never felt worse and really think that I have learned my lesson. This experience has taught me just how important academic integrity really is. I believe that this experience will really help as I continue my academic career as a future college student.
Why academic integrity is so important in today’s academic environment. There are several simple and logical reasons as to why academic integrity is so important. One of these reasons is teachers want to see what the individual can do on their own, not what their best friend can do. In order to become successful in life, students need to put more importance on doing their own work and doing their best. If students do not do their own work how can they be trusted with whatever future job title they plan to hold. Without doing their own work they will have no idea how to do their required job. Another reason is academic integrity is so important is because it shows how honest students really are. If someone believes breaching academic integrity is fine, then they are not just cheating their teachers, they are cheating themselves.
According to Latifa Svidjee “When someone cheats, he is lying to himself, and lying to the professor who is correcting his paper and giving him a good grade for something that the student hasn’t even studied. If a student starts cheating and succeeds, he could go on in his life and continue cheating on others, whether it is in business matters or in his marital life.” As times change and the school continues to increase in difficulty academic integrity will continue to be challenged; however, students must learn the importance of this issue.
At Sheridan College a breach of Academic integrity is taken very seriously, sanctions are created to stop the breach in its earliest stage. Similarly, UVic had a strict integrity policy since 2004, a case was exposed when a student Rezazadeh, was caught cheating via pinhole camera, he and his accomplice were charged of fraud over $5000 (Dedyna, 2013, p. 1). In the second article, Unmaskings the Cheats, Dedyna describes the consequences of cheating and violation of academic integrity. She explained that UVic made sure that cheating will not be tolerated and cheaters will be caught and brought to justice.
Violations are taken to hierarchy, stopping the misuse of technology, and clear information of the penalties could be a few steps in limiting the cases of misconduct against academic integrity. With the advancement of technology not only new ways of plagiarizing develop, also ways to combat the disease of plagiarism lead to a path of cheating free law-abiding society. Students instead of studying risks their future and not understanding that their gadgets are consuming them and stopping them to do the right thing. Before the advancement of technology, many of these violations can’t be detected, but now these violations are taken very seriously by the institutions.
For example, “alleged violation of academic integrity is brought to the attention of department chairs and severe or multiple offenses go as far as the dean of a faculty and from there to offices of vice-president and even the president.” (Dedyna, 2013, p. 2, para. 5). Once they are caught cheating, harsh penalties are imposed on them. There are multiple sanctions that are imposed on students who found guilty of violating the academic integrity policy of UVic such as “Letters of reprimand are kept on a student’s record until four years after graduation.” (Dedyna, 2013, p. 3, para. 12). What can be worse than that carrying this stamp in a pocket that a person was caught red-handed while cheating?
Furthermore, when the awareness increases, these violations will automatically decrease and for the accomplishment of these goals college and universities make sure that students are informed and there will be no excuse of ignorance, and UVic is the best example to model this idea, “That policy is now undergoing on an overhaul to ensure procedures are spelled out correctly.” (Dedyna, 2013, p. 2, para. 6). In the end, when it all comes to reduce the intensity of violations, violations should be treated as serious crimes, misuse of technology must be handled seriously and a comprehensive document of academic policy and procedure is what is needed to combat cheating and this what Sheridan college is striving for.
