The history of the One Ring dates back to the rule of Dark Lord Sauron during the Middle Age. Sauron crafted the ring in the fire of Orodruin. He intended to establish control over the other rings in the Middle Earth. The other rings and that Celebrimbor had made were threatening the lordship of Sauron. In a bid to establish his dominance over the Elves and other races, Sauron crafted the One Ring. Since Sauron knew that the ring needed to have extraordinary powers, he joined his soul in it. As such, his fate was bound to the ring. Thus, the ring was important to Sauron and his lordship as discussed below.
The One Ring had the power to control other rings during the Middle Age. It had been conferred the power to dominate the wills of other beings (McKay et al. 117). It influenced the will of the wearers and non-wearers. However, it gave powers to the wearers depending on their natural capacity. The ring could help the wearer control the will of his subjects. It helped to augment the innate powers of individuals in a way that they could use it to draw its full power with time. As such, Sauron, as the leader of Elves used the ring to obtain the power to control his subjects.
Additionally, the One Ring could project a false vision of the wearer to observers. In this case, a person wearing the ring could appear more powerful than he is in the eyes of the observer. For instance, in the Tower of Cirith Ungol, Sam appeared as a powerful warrior in the eyes of the Orc because he wore the ring. Sam terrified the Orc, and it fled (McKay et al. 103). Thus, the ring made people appear powerful and brave. As a result, it was used by the wearers to intimidate their enemies by projecting a false sense of brevity.

The wearers were also convinced that the ring could help them escape early death and as such, they worshipped it.
