I am going to write a book review on Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. This is the second book in the Harry Potter series. In this book review, I am going to write about the plot of this book. I will also write a little bit about a few characters, and I will also write where the story takes place. In the end I will tell you my own personal opinion on this book, and I will tell you why I liked the book or not.
The Harry Potter series is a series of 7 books. In all of these 7 books, the setting is usually at the same places. In the Chamber of Secrets, Harry starts of at his Uncle and Aunt's place, no. 4 Privet drive. This is in England. Later in the book, Harry goes off to his second year of school at Hogwarts school of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Hogwarts is located in Scotland, but nobody knows the exact location. Harry stays in Hogwarts until the next summer vacation, when he goes back to his relatives.
Harry Potter is the main character (protagonist) of the series. He is described as tall, skinny and jet black messy hair. Since his parents died when Harry was only and infant, he had never experienced love until he started at Hogwarts and met his friends. He is a nice person with loads of courage. Ronald "Ron" Weasley is one of Harry's best friends. He has orange flaming hair and is a funny person. His family is not the richest, so he is always wearing hand-me-downs. Hermione Granger is Harry's other best friend. She has bushy brown hair, and is a muggle born (she is a witch that has non-magical parents). Hermione is a very smart person, and she is always busy reading a book or doing homework.

It's summer vacation. 12-year-old Harry is staying with his only living relatives; Uncle Vernon, Aunt Petunia and his cousin Dudley. When Harry was only a baby, an evil wizard named Lord Voldemort killed his parents. He tried to kill Harry too, but didn't succeed. That's why Harry has a lightning-bolt shaped scar on his forehead. Because of this incident, Harry must live with his muggle (non-magic) relatives in the summer vacation when he doesn't go to school. But he doesn't like it at all.
When the Dursleys are having a dinner party, a house-elf stops by in his room. He tells Harry that he mustn't go back to Hogwarts this year, because a terrible plot is going to happen. Harry defies his orders, and the house elf ruins the dinner party. In this case, Uncle Vernon puts bars on Harry's window, and says that he is not allowed to go back to Hogwarts. Luckily for him, his best friend Ron Weasley and his twin brothers Fred and George saves Harry with a flying car. They take him to their home, The burrow.
Later in the book, they leave for their second year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Hogwarts Express leaves from platform 9 at King's Cross station in London, and is a one-way to the magic school. Ron and Harry doesn't make it to the platform in time, and in panic they ride the flying car so that they will still make it to school.
A while later at Hogwarts, Harry hears a voice. A voice that threatens to kill. Hermione tells Harry that hearing voices is not a good sign, even in the wizarding world. At Halloween night Harry, Ron and Hermione finds Mrs. Norris (the caretaker Mr. Filch's cat) petrified. Beside her a nasty message is written in blood: The Chamber of Secrets is opened again, enemies of the Heir, beware.
More mysterious things happen at Hogwarts. Harry, Ron and Hermione decides to find out who has opened the Chamber, and who the Heir is. They have one suspect: Draco Malfoy, Harry's nemesis. To find out for sure, Hermione brews the Polyjuice Potion. One sip will allow you to turn into another person for a certain amount of time. Harry and Ron turns into Crabbe and Goyle, Malfoy's "minions". When they are in Slytherin's (one of the four houses) common room, they find out that Malfoy is not the Heir. But Malfoy tells them that the Chamber of Secrets was opened before, 50 years ago. But who?
Harry finds an old diary. He discovers that all of the pages are empty, then he turns the book. At the bottom, it's written Tom Marvolo Riddle. Harry starts to write in it, and the book replies. Tom shows Harry a memory of Tom Riddle catching the person who opened the Chamber those 50 years ago. It was Hagrid, the keeper of the keys at Hogwarts.
More people become petrified, and Harry, Ron and Hermione are still looking for the attacker. While they are doing so, Hermione becomes petrified too. When Harry and Ron visits her, they find a piece of paper in her hand. It is information on the monster that lived in the Chamber: a basilisk. This was the creature that petrified the people that had been petrified! If you looked straight into a basilisk's eyes, you would die instantly. But none have died. This didn't make sense! Unless they never looked straight into the basilisk's eye. Harry and Ron puts all the pieces together. They concluded that the people had only seen the reflection of the basilisk, therefor they only got petrified.
The book ends with Harry killing the basilisk in the Chamber of Secrets, and finding out that Tom Riddle was the one that opened the Chamber those 50 years ago, not Hagrid. He is the Heir. Tom Riddle is also known as Lord Voldemort in his teenage years, and Harry destroys his diary with a basilisk fang after he slays the giant snake. All of the people that were petrified were cured to their original self, and Harry goes back to the Dursley's.
I loved this book. Harry Potter is my favorite series, and I will recommend this book to everybody from the age of 9 and upward. This is a fantasy book, but it's filled with humor, excitement and mystery too. What I really like about the Harry Potter series is that you feel like you get sucked into the book and live with the people inside the book. The deception of every scene and character is written in a way that you understand what the author is trying to show you. I hope you want to read this book, and I hope you enjoy it as much as I have all the hundred times I have read it!
