A Book Report on Gulliver’s Travels, a Prose Satire by Jonathan Swift

"Gulliver's Travels" by Johnathan Swift captures the adventures of an English Surgeon named Lemuel Gulliver to four bizarre islands. The story begins as Gulliver's career as a surgeon begins to fail led to him making a decision to go out and travel the world. His first voyage began when he accepts a job on a ship and ends up in the island of Lilliput after his ship get shipwrecked after crashing. Gulliver is captured by mini 6-inch people called Lilliputians and is brought to the Lilliputian king.

Gulliver becomes an asset for the Lilliputians and becomes a Weapon of War against their neighboring enemies, the Blefuscu over a conflict regarding how eggs should be cracked. Gulliver continues to assist the Lilliputians in their war efforts by stealing the Blefuscan's warships. However, conflict arose between Gulliver and the Lilliputians when he refused to enslave the Blefuscans and urinated over to put out a palace fire. He is accused of treason and sentenced to death but before having to face his punishment, he escapes in a boat to return home in England.

Two months later he decides to embark on yet another voyage as a Ship Surgeon. He comes across an island where Giants live called Brobdingnag. He is captured by a Farmer is treated as a freak because of his size difference but was later sold to the queen where he was better taken care of. However, when discussing the customs and behaviors of Gulliver's country with the King, Gulliver realizes that the Giants are just not as sophisticated as humans and is surprised how ignorant they are since even the king didn't have a clue about politics. One day on a beach, the box Gulliver is carried in gets picked up by an eagle and gets dumped in the sea, he is then picked up by a passing British ship and carried back to England once again.

Gulliver set out to sea again, but this time assigned as a Captain of a ship to visit islands and establish trade. On this trip, pirates attack the ship and place Gulliver in a small boat all for himself. While at sea, Gulliver finds a Flying Island called Laputa where he meets several inhabitants, including the King. The people there were so obsessed with abstract math, music, and astronomical theory that they can barely hold a conversation. Afterwards, Gulliver visits Glubbdubdrib where he meets dead figures from history, Luggnagg where he meets the power- obsessed king and Struldburg where he meets a miserable immortal race that made him realize age does not bring wisdom. Gulliver goes to Japan where he meets the emperor and from there, he eventually returns home to England for the third time.

Gulliver sets out on his fourth voyage as a captain of a merchant ship but several of his crew become ill and die on the voyage. Gulliver hires sailors who turned out to be pirates who formed a mutiny against him. This resulted in him being stranded in a land of moral and rational talking horses, the Houyhnhmns, who enslave and control the wild, beast-like humans, the Yahoos. Gulliver stays with the Houyhnhmns for a few years, becoming so captivated with their culture and kindness that he wanted to live there for the rest of his life.

However, Gulliver was told by the Master Horse that he and his kind were not that far off from the yahoos that lived in their land, thus making Gulliver a Yahoo. The Kingdom's Assembly decides that he must either live with the wild Yahoos or go back home. Despite his grief, Gulliver agrees to leave and goes back to England. When he returned home, Gulliver is disgusted by all the people around him, including his family members since he saw the same as the savage Yahoos. Gulliver no longer wished to be with the humans he considers wild Yahoos so he decides instead get two horses who remind him of the smart and civilized Houyhnhmns he once knew.
