Federalists vs. Anti-Federalists

Right after the Revolutionary War, the Thirteen Colonies were in an upheaval. They had only the very basis of a government and no figurehead. They took care of the latter by appointing George Washington as president, but as to the former, it was a little more difficult. Unfortunately, there were two groups of people who wanted two kinds of government. The Federalists supported the idea for a strong central government, while the Anti-Federalists supported a weak central government.

Now, personally, I would have supported the Federalists for three reasons: the fact that they wanted a strong army, the manufacturing, and the fact that they actually wanted to pay off the war debt. The Federalists knew they needed to keep a strong army at command. Paranoid, they may have been, but we were a young country. The British were incredibly ticked off at us in the first place and the Indians weren't exactly an insignificant threat. The War of 1812 proved this, when the two teamed up against America. We had to scramble to get men together, when they should have already been trained and ready to fight. I will admit, back in the 1800s, manufacturing wasn't all that popular. Why would you need factories, there are farmers. But back in the late 18 century, manufacturing was just coming into its potential.

I will admit farmers grew necessary crops and such things, but manufacturing created jobs for women, children, those with no other way of income. Those young men coming back from the war, who hadn't had a profession before needed jobs, and a blacksmith can only take on so many apprentices. And finally, war debt, not something a lot of people want to think about. Unfortunately it was something that needed to be addressed. There were several thousand of our soldiers that needed to be paid. The Anti-Federalists were just happy to let them stew, while those soldiers went without food and other necessities. But the Federalists wanted to pay the soldiers, even if it was by taxing the people. I'm sure the taxes wouldn't have even been half a paycheck, but Jefferson and his crew were stingy and those hard working soldiers, who fought for our freedom, weren't paid at all.

Some had to sell their land, their homes, things that had been in the family for generations, and some of those soldiers had nothing to come back to, because their homes had been destroyed. Many had nothing left, because the Anti-Federalist wouldn't pay their dues. That's why I agree with the Federalists. They knew to keep a standing militia around, they looked to manufacturing to create new jobs, and they knew that some of the soldiers would have need of their wages. I know there are other opinions. But after Adams, the Anti-Federalist took over and they did some serious damage and we took the brunt of the damage for too long.
