It began with the convocation of the Estates-General in May 1789, a body that had not met since 1614. The Estates-General was called in order to approve new taxes to help pay for the French government's massive debt. This event marked the beginning of the French Revolution. Over the next few years, the revolutionaries fought against the monarchy and the aristocracy, eventually leading to the execution of King Louis XVI in 1793.
