Character Analysis of Jed King in The Song, a Movie by Richard Ramsey

A famous musician by the name of Jed King plays the main character in the movie "The Song," a movie inspired by the life of Solomon and the Song of Songs. He falls in love and writes a song called "The Song", dedicated to his soon-to-wife, Rose, who he would eventually start a family with. The couple portrayed the ideal image of a happy, God-loving family. However, his busy, demanding lifestyle as a musician causes him to travel frequently, often leaving Rose and the rest of his family behind. The events that occur with a band member named Shelby over the course of time lead to unfortunate decisions and consequences which challenge Jed's faith.

Jed meets Rose in the beginning of the film while performing a gig at her family's vineyard. Rose represents a friendly, pure, and kind-hearted person and the immediate chemistry Jed and Rose have is notable. Within minutes of their meet, Rose's ex boyfriend and drunk girlfriend make an appearance, leading to Rose telling Jed that Eddie dumped her because she would not partake in pre-marital sex with him. This affirmation of Rose strongly shows her passion for her faith and the respect for her physical body. It also shows that she is humble, which is a very important characteristic through out the old testament. She is bold, expresses her emotions and thoughts through out the movie, and maintains a healthy relationship and walk with God.

Soon after Jed and Rose's initial meet, it was not long until Jed asks for her hand in marriage. Their pure love for each other seems perfect and effortless; they begin life as newlyweds and have a child together. Although the new changes in Jed's life, he continues to travel often with his band, not devoting much time to his new family. Over time, Jed gets sucked into some unfortunate situations involving alcohol, drugs, and immoral sex with Shelby. Shelby seems like a decent person at first, she consistently and successfully brainwashes Jed by telling him things like "do what you want and do not feel guilty about it" and "let it go."

Shelby absolutely represents evil temptation in Jed's life. She adamantly seeks pleasure for herself, regardless of the consequences that would soon arise. Shelby would often drag Jed out to bars with her, pushing him to take shots and other scandalous doings. One night, Jed and Shelby slept together, and Shelby knowingly hid Jed's phone from him while Rose was trying to get in contact with him all night. These first couple of events paved way to continued evil temptation. Hereafter, Jed cannot even sing "The Song" on stage without feeling physically sick. In fact, the first time he attempted to, he passed out on stage. However, Jed overlooks these mental and physical feelings and continues to have a relationship with Shelby. travelling, doing drugs, and drinking.

Shelby and Jed's relationship negatively grows physically and mentally as they travel It wasn't until the point of almost dying from overdose do Jed and Shelby start to vanish their relationship. worldwide, do drugs, and drinking excessive alcohol. Like wise, his relationship with his wife drifts, leaving Rose feeling unwanted, hopeless and lonely. Rose wants be supportive and be there for his gigs, but Jed would simply never approve of her going along.

Rose continues to remain a strong, independent woman, despite her and her husband's relationship and while staying home with their child. It wasn't until the point of almost overdosing do Jed and Shelby's relationship start to vanish. Due to Jed's lack of performance on stage and diminishing body, scenarios involving physical and verbal abuse between him and Shelby eventually lead to Shelby getting fired, which ends the relationship. Rose finds out about the affair later when Shelby shows up drunk to their home, unannounced.

The devil can often lead us to believe our own lies and tempt us with pleasure in different areas of our lives, mentally or physically. A simple, well-known concept of temptation is when Adam and Eve are tempted to eat the fruit in the garden of Eden. Additionally, women were tempting of men such as King David as he convicted adultery with Bathsheba and plotted to have her husband killed in order to cover up his sin. Although there is no planned death in this movie, Jed comes very close to it as he abuses alcohol and drugs while trying to cover up his own sins and emotions.

A humbled personality and great faith are also important themes to recognize in the old testament. In the book of Numbers, it says "Now Moses was a very humble man, humbler than anyone else on the face of the earth." Rose is like Moses because she is consistent, faithful, and humble through her troubles. She never gave up on Jed and supported him unconditionally, even though their marriage was on the rocks. She was slow to anger, patient, and willing to make her marriage with Jed better, unaware of the relations with Shelby.

The events that occurred with Shelby over the course of time lead to unfortunate decisions and consequences which ultimately challenged Jed's faith. The movie effectively shows how the devil uses temptation via substance abuse and other people to negatively impact lives. Shelby was already addicted to pills and alcohol, and then the devil tempted both her and Jed into immoral sexual relations. On a brighter note, Rose remained faithful, hopeful, and humble like Moses through out the couple's hardships.
