The difference between gender is one of the most controversial topics in the media today. It’s so controversial because in the past, we have assigned certain roles and duties to each gender. However, there has been a recent uproar in the past century. People are fighting to forget about the differences in gender that don’t seem to apply to today’s society.
One way of seeing the difference between gender could be by comparing the physical aspects. Men tend to be physically bigger/taller, have deeper voices and have facial hair. Women have different genitalia with the ability to carry a baby, different hormones, and other physical differences like wider hips for delivering babies. There are obvious physical differences between each gender, but we live in a world where the physical barriers are now able to be crossed. It’s only a matter of time before the process of doing so is deemed acceptable by the majority of society. In the 1960’s, the term transgender probably wasn’t in everyone’s vocabulary. People have protested and fought for what they believe in so, in turn, change has happened. The United States recently made gay marriage legal in all states. This is an example of where we overcame issues relating to gender and beliefs because the system that we were using wasn’t popular by the rest of the country.

The people who created our land set a precedent where the women were supposed to care for the children, tend to the house and keep the man satisfied. Men on the other hand did, what seems to be, the grueling jobs and supplied the family with the necessities for shelter and meals. This is obviously an out-dated idea that most don’t agree with, but that's where we look and that's who we give credit to when we say where these differences come from. With time, the system has evened out a lot and women have seen a major improvement in their lifestyles. Women engineers, doctors, teacher or even construction workers are common sightings in today’s sighting. There’s still work that needs to be done to make them more equal, including equal starting pay or paid maternity leaves, but if activists keep working like they did in the 20’s and so on, change will come. In my household, what mom says goes.
When asking my friends if their mom’s are in charge, it seems they agree and nothing happens without their mom’s approval. However, once we step outside of the house the inequalities towards women are undeniable.
The roles of women and men seem to be even in the military, speaking from my point of view. It seems that the military used the system of only having men in the field at first, to having women nurses, to having women in small combat groups, to now having them with the men. They’ve proved that if they have the ability, they can accomplish anything a man can. Two of my friends recently enlisted in the military, both as combat engineers, and they’re both doing fine. One is a woman and one is a man. This job probably wouldn’t be offered to women years ago, but conditions have improved and we’ve realized that there really isn’t a difference between the genders. If a woman has the ability, she should be given the opportunity.
There are differences between gender both on the physical and mental level. We’re working towards a society where we look past the differences as bad things. The physical changes between men and women have been the sole factor that determined superiority for many years, but we now have technology to change what's physical. We live in the period of time where what we believe needs to be readjusted and fixated with the new technology. We’re working towards a world where there aren’t gender differences. In my opinion, it’s just a matter of time before our beliefs catch up with our actions.
