The famous detective that is in all his stories is Sherlock Holmes, along with his associate, Dr Watson. When “The Adventure of the Speckled Band” was published, Sherlock Holmes became a household name. 'The Speckled Band' was one of his stories that was published in 1892 and it’s still enjoyed by many people 100s of years later.

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was a masterful author that excelled at writing detective stories; he sold millions of copies that enthralled the public. There was one question though: how did he do it? In order to keep his books high quality, he combined an array of features in” The Adventure of the Speckled Band” to make a captivating and suspenseful tale.

In the book, the murder is carried out viciously and in a peculiar manner. In the book’s society, there is a generalization that describes all stepfathers as being nasty and mean. With Julia’s upcoming wedding, Roylott knew that he had to get rid of her and strike quickly. He knew that all the money would go to her husband when she got married. The only family left for her was her sister and him. This is shown to be ironic because as the audience, we would expect Dr Roylott to protect his stepdaughters instead of wanting to kill them. We see another layer added because Roylott doesn’t want to get his hands dirty.

So, he trains a serpent from India. This makes the reader feels sympathy for Helen because she is stuck between a rock and a hard place; because if she rats Roylott out to the police or tells the good detective about him and his temper, she would lose the only family figure she has left. Roylott articulately planned his crime in a way that no one would suspect him before it is too late. It was a slow, long, and painful process which required him to have a lot of patience.

Sherlock Holmes was a very good detective in the book. He was able to solve the murder quickly, which shows that he was a person that was very intelligent and hard-working. Holmes observed even the smallest details and drew logical conclusions from them. The evidence he observed was: the bruises on Helen Stoners arm, the bell-pull, the safe and the ventilator. It was a good thing that Holmes picked up on these important details because some others wouldn't notice how beneficial these clues were to the case. The story introduced a red herring that made people believe it was the band of gypsies, but because Holmes was so clever, he did not fall for it.

The way the arch villain is shown to the audience is very stereotypical. The villain in this Sherlock Holmes story is Dr. Roylott and his character was made to be frightening, threatening and uncaring. His behavior and mannerisms suggest that he is unafraid and in control of everyone. This makes the audience suspect that he is the murderer and we see this when going back to the quote ''He became terror in the village''. This quote shows us that he controls the village because everyone is afraid of him. As the murderer he seems to be a very meticulous person because the murder was premeditated. He was presented as a very selfish character because the motive for his crime was money.

In conclusion, ”The Adventure of the Speckled Band” is an intriguing little puzzler with many elements that bring it all together along with its brilliance. Conan Doyle used many different techniques to make sure that the reader was kept in suspense and stayed intrigued during the book. During the book he develops each character successfully and to the fullest extent. In the book, Doyle uses varying types of language that is emotive, dramatic, archaic and sophisticated to keep the audience intrigued.

Holmes is always one step ahead of all the characters, including the audience, and this makes it so that he may know about something that everyone else does not. Most of the characters, besides the good detective, are somewhat stereotypical and simple. Holmes is a complex character, and this is reflected by how meticulous and observant he is. Overall, this book brings together all the right elements for a perfect murder mystery novel and is something that mesmerizes readers all over the world.
