Every student has that moment. They are sitting in class, doing their work, when it strikes them. It can come out of nowhere. They nervously look at the teacher, who has just started teaching about a new concept. I can’t ask her now, the student tells themself. So they just sit there. This is an ongoing problem that has swept the school districts of Keller. All based off this old out-of-date policy: Students Must Seek Teacher Permission to Use the Restroom. This is a huge problem for three main reasons: It causes loss of focus, time, and can even damage your intestinal health. Overall, it can be very bad for both physical and educational aspects of your life.

Teaching can be hard. It involves attention and effort, and most students don’t want to put either of those things in. So when a teacher‘s lesson is coming together perfectly and and the attention is on them, nothing should interrupt it. But something usually always does, in the form of “Can I use the restroom?”. This causes the teachers to lose their train of thought and, in turn, the students to lose their attention. We need to do something about it. If we just let the students freely leave in the during a lesson, with some fine-tuned adjustments, we could help the teachers and the students do their jobs better.

When a teacher calls on a student and lets them go to the bathroom, it may not seem like lots of time was lost. But when a teacher loses their train of thought, they usually say something like “hold on, give me a minute”. In that ‘minute’, we lose maybe 30 seconds on average. How much time you may ask? Well, let’s find out. According to the ECS (Education Commission of States), Texas requires a minimum of 180 school days. And in those 180 school days, there are 5 class periods. So if we lost 30 seconds a period, that would be 150 seconds a day. That means that we lose 7.5 hours a year! That is more than an entire school day! Plus, that only accounts for if we have the bare minimum of school days. All we have to do is veto one simple policy and we could save more than seven and a half hours! That is 30 minutes longer than an entire school day.

Aside from losing attention and valuable time, let’s look at the physical aspect of it: Can forcibly holding in waste be harmful to your overall health? The answer is, it depends. When you need to use the restroom, your body is telling you, “It’s time to get rid of this”. While holding it in can be OK for a little bit, over a long time, it could be detrimental. When you hold in your excretions, you are exposing yourself to the dangerous bacteria that live inside of it. While 15 minutes won’t hurt you, going for a long time could cause diarrhea, pain, and finally intestinal infections due to a build up of E. Coli. If gone untreated, this could become a possibly fatal kidney infection. There is no exact time for urine it to be dangerous, as it all depends on the age and amount of fluid they’ve had. To find out, you need to take the age of the person, divide by two, then add six ( Age/2 + 6). This will give you the amount of ounces that that person can hold. For example, a 14 year-olds bladder can hold 13 ounces, a 15 year-old can hold 13.5, and so on. So when your bladder reaches about half of its maximum capacity, it will start to signal your brain to use the restroom. Your brain will then signal your bladder to “hold on” until it’s ready. Holding it in is a constant fight between your bladder and your will power. All the while, the longer you wait, the higher chance of infection.

So why should we take the risk? If loss of solid education and 7.5 hours doesnt seem like enough to change our school for the better, then what about the safety and comfort of our students in our schools? I propose that we allow students to leave once per period to go to the bathroom without asking the teacher. That way, students will be able to slip out during a lecture without bothering the teacher, wasting time, or threatening their intestinal health. Students will then be accountable for going to the restroom and coming back immediately. If a student is found wandering, they will have to ask permission from the teacher to use the bathroom for the remainder of the six weeks. If a student is found wandering during the final week of the six weeks, their punishment will be continued onto the next six weeks. I sincerely hope that you take action on behalf of the students at KHS and consider making these minor changes. Thank you so much for the work that you put in to make Keller High School such a better place!
