Shell believes that the millennium development goals of UN for example, poverty and illiteracy reduction cannot be achieved by governments alone and it requires an effective public private partnership. Therefore, shell is actively engaged in areas such as microfinance and entrepreneurship which are a means towards achieving the millennium development goals.

BP makes direct contributions to communities by launching community programs. It spent around $134 million by donating it to UK charities and other small scale industries.
